Report: Samsung cuts Galaxy A production by 20% this quarter over memory prices, flagships get priority

The best-selling series in the Gulf has become a casualty of the memory crunch. According to Korean outlet ETNews, citing industry sources, Samsung cut its Q4 (October to December) Galaxy A production plan by about 20% versus the plan set at the start of the year, which works out to roughly 10 million fewer units on an annual basis, and it is targeting a further cut of at least 10% in 2027. Samsung has not commented on the report.

Why
The main driver is memory (RAM and storage) pricing, which has jumped so much this year that it now represents half the cost of some mid-range and budget phones, and Samsung's MX mobile division is, per the report, heading for its first ever annual loss. On top of that, materials for components such as PCBs and MLCCs are being prioritised for higher-margin AI chips. Samsung had kept Galaxy A output steady because it had easier access to raw materials than Chinese makers, but with shortages expected to persist it is steering components to the Galaxy S and Galaxy Z lines.
| Item | Figure |
|---|---|
| Q4 Galaxy A production cut | About 20% below the original plan |
| Annual equivalent | Roughly 10 million units |
| 2027 plan | At least 10% fewer |
| Galaxy A share of Samsung shipments | About 70% |
| Samsung annual shipments | 230–240 million phones |
Why it matters
The Galaxy A17, A37 and A57 are the phones you see in every shop in the Gulf, and lower production usually means fewer deals and firmer prices. The report warns openly that the next generations could ship with weaker displays or cameras at higher prices than their predecessors, in line with Counterpoint's March warning about rising retail prices in 2026. If you were planning to buy an A57 in the White Friday sales, the report says this quarter's stock is lower than expected.
My take
This matters more than any flagship announcement this week because it hits the majority who buy below AED 1,500. Samsung can afford to sell the S26 at a fat margin, but if it steps back from the mid-range, HONOR, Xiaomi and vivo will fill the gap at zero margin for market share. My advice: if your A-series phone works fine, do not rush to upgrade; if you are buying, today's deals on the A57 and A37 are better than what comes after the crunch.
