Xiaomi 18 Fold: the first foldable on Xiaomi's own chip — and quite a bit cheaper than the Duo and Fold 8

A week before Apple's foldable, Xiaomi announced its own: the Xiaomi 18 Fold, first shown at IFA in Berlin and officially launched in China on 7 September. The news is not the fold itself — the news is that this is the first flagship running a chip designed by Xiaomi: the XRING O3.

Why this phone matters more than its specs
Three points. First, Xiaomi became the third phone maker in the world to put its own chip in a foldable flagship after Apple and Samsung (and Google in the Pixel). That changes the price equation long-term. Second, a 6,000 battery in a 5 mm body — the gap to the Duo (two batteries, ~24 hours) and Fold 8 Ultra (5,000) is not a detail. Third, the price: ≈ $450 cheaper than the Fold 8 Ultra and ≈ $360 cheaper than the Duo, with a real telephoto Apple does not have.

The Gulf question
Xiaomi sells officially in the Gulf, but its previous foldables (MIX Fold) never reached us officially. If the 18 Fold goes global, it will be the first Xiaomi foldable to enter the Gulf market officially — and the global price is usually 15–25% above China's. So expect ≈ KWD 600–650 if it arrives. Until then, anyone who wants one imports it from China with no warranty and no full Google services.
Bottom line
On paper, the best foldable for the money this year. In practice, three questions only a review can answer: the new chip's heat, HyperOS stability on the big screen, and whether it reaches the Gulf at all. The moment a unit lands in my hands, the review is here.
