Why the iPhone no longer excites me (and why that is a good thing)

I open the box, peel the film, turn it on. Nothing. No "wow", no disappointment. Just a very excellent phone that works exactly as expected.
Excitement was a sign of problems
If you remember, the most "exciting" iPhone generations were the ones with radical change: a bigger screen, a notch, new buttons. And radical change comes with a full year of software bugs.
Today the phone is boring — and boring in tech means the thing has matured. Your fridge does not excite you, but you never think about it, and that is the highest praise.
Where did the excitement go?
To the devices that have not settled yet: foldables, glasses, earbuds that translate. That is where the bugs are, and where the spectacle is.
If you want a phone you forget exists: iPhone. If you want a phone you talk about: something else.
