WhatsApp reworks groups: a status only the group sees, pins with no expiry, and a «mentioned me» filter

| Group Status |

The family group is getting its own story. WhatsApp announced a bundle of four group features, the headline one being Group Status: a status you post inside a group that only its members can see, react to and add to, disappearing after 24 hours like a regular status. The announcement went up on the WhatsApp blog on October 29 and GSMArena picked it up on the 31st.

The four features
| Group Status | Visible to group members only; view, react, like and add your own; disappears after 24 hours |
|---|---|
| Permanent pins | Pin a message without picking a duration (the options used to be 24 hours, 7 days or 30 days) |
| History after joining | An admin taps a new member's name and sends them earlier messages after they have joined; still end-to-end encrypted |
| Mentions and replies filter | A new chat-list filter showing unread groups where you were mentioned or got a direct reply, including @all messages |
WhatsApp gave no rollout schedule or country list; features like these usually arrive gradually over a few weeks with app updates on iOS and Android.
Why it matters
The Gulf is one of the heaviest users of WhatsApp groups anywhere: family, the diwaniya, work, school parents. Permanent pins fix the «where is the account number we pinned?» problem after 7 days, and history-after-joining ends the «what did I miss?» question for every new member. Group Status is a clear attempt to pull the family story out of Snapchat and Instagram and into the group itself.
My take
The strongest feature here is the mentions filter, not Group Status. Anyone in twenty groups knows the real problem is not a lack of features but getting lost in 300 messages looking for the one with your name in it. Group Status will be fun in family groups for two weeks, then become a new source of noise unless there is a way to mute it. Permanent pins should have existed from day one.
