Some iPhone Duo inner screens are cracking, and iFixit points at the hinge

Forty-eight hours after launch, the iPhone Duo has its first real problem: buyers on r/iPhoneDuo say the inner display cracked without a drop. The pattern is nearly identical everywhere: the hinge suddenly feels stiff, you push through, there is a pop, and permanent lines appear, one vertical along the hinge and one horizontal across the right half. 9to5Mac counted about ten cases as of yesterday morning, some hours after unboxing and two during initial setup.

What Apple said
Nothing official yet. In practice, most people who walked into an Apple Store left with a replacement, while carrier customers found no swap stock (especially 1TB and 2TB). One owner was told the damage was a drop and would cost money. GSMArena thinks a specific production batch is affected, since most reviewers and users have not hit it.
iFixit teardown: the prime suspect
iFixit opened the phone and built a 3D model from CT scans. Three theories: the central support bar may not retract when the phone closes and presses on the panel, the curved rails rise above neighbouring parts during folding, or several edges converge near the cable opening where most failures cluster. iFixit stresses this is not a definitive diagnosis. It still gave the Duo 5/10, its best score for any foldable, thanks to two batteries on electrically releasable adhesive (11.57 + 7.51 Wh) and a clipped, not glued, screen bezel.

Why it matters
In the UAE the Duo starts at AED 8,499, sold out at some retailers within hours and is being flipped at inflated prices. If you own one: do not force a stiff hinge. If it resists, stop and go to an Apple Store (Dubai Mall, Mall of the Emirates, Yas Mall) rather than a reseller, because the stores are the ones swapping on the spot. Keep the receipt, and if you have AppleCare+, log the case today.
My take
Ten cases out of hundreds of thousands is not a failure, but it does mean Apple’s first foldable was not spared the first-generation curse Samsung lived through with the original Fold. The worrying part is not the count, it is Apple’s silence and carrier buyers waiting without a phone. My call: if you have not bought, wait for the December batch; if you have, treat the hinge gently for two weeks until Apple speaks.
