Google Messages starts rolling out “Enhanced protection”: Gemini reads an unknown sender’s intent and flags scams before you fall for them

Announced on October 14, the Enhanced protection mode is now actually showing up in Google Messages. 9to5Google spotted it in beta 20261020_00_RC00, and the rollout is gradual, “over the coming weeks”. The idea: instead of blocking only the first suspicious message, Gemini follows the full context of a conversation with any unsaved number and warns you when the intent looks like a scam, even if the first messages seemed harmless.

What it actually does
| Scam detection | Cloud Gemini models analyse chats with unknown senders · processed inside Private AI Compute, which Google says is encrypted and inaccessible even to Google |
|---|---|
| Link checks | On-device Gemini Nano plus real-time web signals vet an unfamiliar link before you open it · needs a Pixel 10 or newer, Galaxy S26, Z Fold8/Z Flip8 or “other select devices” |
| Warnings | Redesigned to give you more time and context before tapping a link from a number not in your contacts |
| Eligible devices for the mode | Per TechRepublic: Pixel 6 and later, Galaxy S24 and later, Z Fold6/Flip6 and later, and other AICore devices (Android 14+) |
| Turning it on | Opt-in: Messages › your profile picture › Settings › Protection & safety › Spam & scam protection › Enhanced protection |
| Countries | Google has published no country list · availability varies by device and manufacturer |

Why it matters
“Your parcel is on hold” and “your bank account will be suspended” texts are a daily routine in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, and most Android phones in the Gulf are Samsungs, so any Galaxy S24 or newer is a candidate for the new mode. Three caveats: you have to enable it yourself, the smart link check is limited to the newest devices, and we do not yet know whether detection works as well on Arabic messages or when it officially reaches our region.
My take
This is the most important addition to a messaging app in years, because scams today are not a link in one message but a conversation that builds trust over days. Sending conversation context to the cloud is naturally unsettling, and Google needs to spell out exactly what is sent and how long it is kept, because TechRepublic is right that this is undisclosed. Even so, if you have older relatives on a Galaxy, this is the first setting I would turn on for them the moment it arrives.
